Chasing Sunrise in Bagasbas

"Yesterday's failure is redeemed at the sunrise” - Todd Stocker

Bagasbas Beach is a tricycle ride away from Daet, Camarines Norte. It is known as one of the top surfing destinations in the country. In fact, it is the home of one of the best female surfer in the Philippines but what made me fall in love with this place is not in the water.

Bagasbas has an almost infinite bay walk that any running enthusiast will definitely enjoy. Whether you choose to run on sand or on concrete, Bagasbas will give you the same gorgeous view of the sunrise and the beach.

A Runner's Haven
This place has a wide and long shoreline that nested an equally long sea wall which separates the beach from the hotels and restaurants. A brilliant way to give the public access to whichever spot along the beach they want to enjoy and a good way to control the trash that is going in the water. Volunteers are visible all throughout the day cleaning the beach of garbage and sea weeds.

One good thing about this place is that most of the people I met here have a good head on their shoulders. Owners and workers of both the hotels and surf shops know that the beach is their source of income and therefore they take equally good care of the environment and their guests.

How to go to Bagasbas Beach

DLTB, Superlines and Philtranco are the most popular bus lines that have trips to Daet. From Alabang to Daet, bus fare of DLTB Bus Co. is Php 375 for 10 hours of travel time. The bus terminal is located in front of Metropolis Mall. Upon arriving at the DLTB bus terminal in Daet, ride a tricycle to Bagasbas beach for Php 70.

Where to Stay

As compared to Baler and La Union, there is a limited number of hotels/motels/inns at this place. Those that are noteworthy are Surfer's Dine Inn and Bagasbas Light House. The latter provides first class amenities and  the former is recommended for budget travelers.

We stayed at Surfer's Dine Inn and it is one of the best decision that we made for this trip.

Surfer's Dine Inn provides the best value for your money, not to mention they serve the best food in the whole stretch of Bagasbas Beach. Our personal favorites are Buttered Chicken, Coleslaw Salad, Garlic Shrimp, Chopsuey, Sizzling Tuna, Sizzling Squid and Tapsilog.

What To Do

1. Surf. Bagasbas Beach is the home of Mocha Vargas, one of the top female surfer in the country. If you are going to stay in Surfer's Dine Inn, just tell them that you want to learn how to surf and they will contact Mocha who will then arrange a surf instructor for you.

2. Pig out. Try out everything on the menu of Surfer's Dine Inn Restaurant and you will not regret even one dish.

3. Break a sweat. Run, walk, repeat 100x. Bagasbas beach is one of the best running spot that I have ever been to. There is also a free aerobics class by the beach on Sunday mornings.

4. Enjoy the beach. Everyday you will see families, lovers and group of friends passing time and enjoying themselves on the beach. It will sometimes make you think why the heck do you let yourself be stuck in the concrete jungle.

5. Watch the Sunrise. The photos below will tell you why:

Chasing Sunrise

In my own humble-runner-non-surfer opinion, Bagasbas beach is better than Sabang beach in Baler. It may not have powdery white sand but this place unassuming place caught my heart. I would definitely go back to this place and try to visit Apuao Grande Island, Calaguas, and Maculabo Island. If I was alone I would have hitchhiked and went to those islands during my stay but I was with someone who loves the waves.

This is the first time that I ever traveled with someone special and honestly, I think I'd have a deeper experience if I was alone. I would have met more people, made better connections and formulated more intense self-reflections. I guess traveling with someone is an art that I have yet to master. But I did get to know the person I am with better which is also one of the beauty of traveling.
